Lesson 8 — Demonstrative Pronouns: The こそあど (Kosoado) System

What Is こそあど?

こそあど (Kosoado) is the Japanese system of demonstrative words — the equivalents of “this,” “that,” “here,” “there,” and “which.” Every word in this system begins with one of four prefixes, each indicating a different spatial relationship between the speaker, the listener, and the object being referred to.

PrefixDistanceReference
こ (ko)Near the speaker“this / here”
そ (so)Near the listener“that / there”
あ (a)Far from both speaker and listener“that over there”
ど (do)Unknown / asking“which / where?”

💡 Why learn this as a system? Because the same four prefixes apply consistently across all categories — things, nouns, places, and directions. Once you understand こ/そ/あ/ど, you can build and recognize dozens of words automatically.
