Overview
あげる, くれる, and もらう all describe the transfer of an object or a favour between people. In English, we often use a single verb — “give” or “receive” — regardless of perspective. Japanese, however, requires you to choose the correct verb based on your position in the exchange and the direction of the transfer relative to the speaker.
Getting this right is less about memorizing rules and more about developing an instinct for whose perspective you are speaking from.
