Japanese Guide for Complete Beginners #4-1 – Japanese Verbs

Unlike English, Japanese verbs don’t change based on the subject.

The verb 食べる (to eat) stays exactly the same whether it is “I,” “You,” “He,” or “She” doing the action. There is no “I eat” versus “He eats” kind of ending change.

私は食べる。
Hiragana: わたしはたべる。
Romaji: Watashi wa taberu.
English: I eat.

あなたは食べる。
Hiragana: あなたはたべる。
Romaji: Anata wa taberu.
English: You eat.

彼は食べる。
Hiragana: かれはたべる。
Romaji: Kare wa taberu.
English: He eats.

彼女は食べる。
Hiragana: かのじょはたべる。
Romaji: Kanojo wa taberu.
English: She eats.
