What Is こそあど?
こそあど (Kosoado) is the Japanese system of demonstrative words — the equivalents of “this,” “that,” “here,” “there,” and “which.” Every word in this system begins with one of four prefixes, each indicating a different spatial relationship between the speaker, the listener, and the object being referred to.
| Prefix | Distance | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| こ (ko) | Near the speaker | “this / here” |
| そ (so) | Near the listener | “that / there” |
| あ (a) | Far from both speaker and listener | “that over there” |
| ど (do) | Unknown / asking | “which / where?” |
💡 Why learn this as a system? Because the same four prefixes apply consistently across all categories — things, nouns, places, and directions. Once you understand こ/そ/あ/ど, you can build and recognize dozens of words automatically.
