N3 Grammar — Giving examples

Overview

All four introduce examples, but they differ in tone and in the relationship between the example and the group. 例えば is the plain, neutral “for example,” setting up an illustration. をはじめ picks out X as the prime, representative example of a larger set — “X and others like it.” なんか/なんて are casual and attitude-laden, tossing out an example with a dismissive, belittling, or self-deprecating shrug. か何か is a vague “or something,” leaving the example open. The shorthand for students: 例えば illustrates neutrally, をはじめ leads a group, なんか/なんて add attitude, か何か stays vague. The entries lead with a simple example, then a funny one, and draw the boundaries.
