Overview
Both express degree by comparing something to a benchmark, but they lean in opposite directions. ほど marks a high degree — “to the extent of, to the point that” — using a vivid comparison to show how extreme something is (死ぬほど疲れた, “tired to the point of death”). くらい・ぐらい marks an approximate amount (“about, around”) or a low/minimal degree (“only that much,” “the least one could do”). The shorthand for students: ほど scales up to an extreme point; くらい often scales down to an approximation or a small degree. They overlap in the “to the extent of” sense and are sometimes interchangeable, but their default pulls — high versus approximate/low — are the key.
