Lesson 19 — The Volitional Form

What Is the Volitional Form?

The volitional form (意向形 いこうけい) is a verb conjugation that expresses intention, suggestion, invitation, or encouragement. It is the Japanese equivalent of “Let’s…”, “Shall we…?”, or “I think I’ll…”.

It appears in both casual and polite registers:

  • Casual volitional (〜よう / 〜おう) — used among friends and family
  • Polite volitional (〜ましょう) — used in formal or courteous situations

—From here on, it will be available to members only
